Avoiding traffic congestion has become a challenge for humans while travelling through cities. However, animals such as ants follow optimized shortest paths to their foodest without constituting bottlenecks. Thus, taking inspiration from nature we propose a strategy to avoid traffic congestion, based on ant pheromones. The proposed strategy is different from existing approaches in the sense that it does not use vehicle speed based method. Instead, we propose to use the vehicle CO_2 emission intensity to identify congestions. In this paper, we present a model that shows how emission data can be used to avoid traffic congestion.
