Automotive grade GNSS receivers have been developed to meet the market need for navigation, providing the accuracies necessary for navigation, sufficient to know which road a car is on. The robustness of the solution has been improved through the use of dead reckoning and map matching techniques. With the recent advances in ADAS, and car to car communications for safety systems the demand for positioning accuracy is increasing from knowing which road, to knowing not only which lane a car is in, but also where in the lane the car is positioned. This paper describes some of the challenges and potential solutions for "where in lane" positioning for the automotive industry.
