Modern ports, including Port Everglades, are experiencing space constraints for new construction as they upgrade their facilities to accommodate post-Panamax vessels. Organic growth has forced Port Everglades planners to devise projects that maintain operations, build congruent projects with existing facilities, and accommodate expanding environmental regulations. Developing congested, suboptimal project locations requires innovation to maximize usability. The Broward County Public Works Department Seaport Engineering and Construction Division confronted this complex task by breaking down the project to a more manageable multi-phase plan for expansion. This paper will explore the unique design elements associated with the harbor basin expansion project and investigate the solutions devised by the Public Works Department engineering staff and design team.
