We will describe the design and cold-test characterization (i.e., without beam) of a broadband eight-beam, fundamental-mode multiple-beam klystron (MBK), and present preliminary experimental hot-test results. The MBK is designed to have a 3-dB instantaneous bandwidth of ~6% and uses an existing eight-beam electron gun that operates at a nominal cathode voltage of 45 kV and a total current of 32 A [1]. The 3-D particle-in-cell (PIC) code, MAGIC 3D [2], was the principle design tool used to optimize the electrodynamic circuit which consists of a two-gap input cavity, three idler cavities, and a two-gap output cavity [3]. All of the multi-gap cavities operate in the π-mode. The cavity frequencies and Q's are summarized in Table I.
