Traffic detection and collection techniques have rapidly developed in recent years. Detectors such as coils, infrared, ultrasonic, and video, as well as GPS locating techniques have been widely used to build a variety of traffic data collection systems. The Bluetooth technique, as a relatively new detection and collection technique, plays an ever more important role in traffic information collection. With the development of the Bluetooth technique, related products are also more abundant. This paper establishes a traffic information collection system based on Bluetooth and lists the physical structure, software structure, and work procedure of this system. Based on an in-depth study of Bluetooth and the micro-controller principle, this paper develops Bluetooth-based traffic information collection software using machine language and achieves the function that road Bluetooth detection devices can search the address of a car Bluetooth device. After the processing of traffic information data, we can determine values of travel time and average speed. Furthermore, we can assess the real-time traffic situation with the indicator of road average speed. Finally, the case study proves the advantages of the traffic information collection methods based on Bluetooth and discusses the installation layout of Bluetooth detection devices in different road forms. The Bluetooth technique in traffic detection provides a strong basis for further transportation planning, traffic control and management.
