The expressways in China have made great achievements, and have played an increasingly important role in the economic development. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the traffic safety characteristics of expressways in China and to provide the basis for the targeted countermeasures to improve the expressways' traffic safety. The trend of the accidents on expressways in China is analyzed using the time series analysis method. The safety situation and the characteristics of the accidents on expressways are analyzed. Although the fatalities of the accidents and the proportion are high, the safety advantage of expressways is obvious compared with the other highways. The prominent problems of the accidents on the expressways include rear-end collisions, scraping against pedestrians, speeding, fatigue driving, and devastating accidents with over ten fatalities in one accident. As a result, measures should be taken to solve these problems.
