A Smart Format Floating-point Engine for GNSS Receiver

As the development of multi-mode Global NavigationSatellite System (GNSS) and growing location-basedapplications, the demands for power consumption andperformance efficiency of a GNSS receiver areincreasingly high. In common GNSS design energy hasbeen wasted since data format was not optimized andspecified on the basis of variable application accuracy. Totake advantage of the floating-point operation anddecrease its power consumption at the same time, thispaper proposes a Smart Format Floating-point Engine(SF-FPE) for GNSS receiver, targeting to provide variableformat floating-point operations specific for the targetmodule and application scenarios. Implemented in 90 nmCMOS technology, the design can operate at a frequencyof 200 MHz and required area could be as small as 0.06mm~2. The peak energy efficiency could be as high as45GFlops/W.
