摘要

A growing ageing population has become one of the greatest challenges in many countries inthe 21st century. As people age, general health and fitness begins to deteriorate, which fordrivers contributes towards increased involvement in accidents and increased likelihood ofdeath or serious injury. However, in the UK it is seen as desirable to keep older drivers on theroad for as long as possible. This paper examines the challenges facing older drivers to gainan insight into how ITS can be used to address these challenges in collaboration with designand policy solutions. Three stages have been undertaken in this research – focus groups witholder drivers; interviews with key stakeholders; and a field study. The findings suggest thatolder drivers are facing specific age-related challenges and certain driving conditions aregetting more stressful. However, in-vehicle ITS applications have the potential to providesupport to stressful situations and support older drivers drive safely for longer.
