To guard against the flammability of asphalt concrete pavement, the flame retarding performance of asphalt mixture SMA13 was evaluated using cone calorimeter method. In this paper, two types of flame retardant modified asphalt and one type of non-flame retardant modified asphalt were tested. Experimental results show that the asphalt mixture can be ignited in a short time under the action of thermal radiation, and releases a large amount of heat and smoke, including poisonous gas. However, by treating the asphalt mixture with flame retardant the time required for ignition is increased while levels of smoke heat are significantly reduced. Therefore, the security of the asphalt concrete pavement used in tunnels can be greatly improved using the flame retardant modified asphalt.
