Session A1/2: Conference Opening: Renewable Energy and Breakwaters

A comment on Alderney Breakwater - The breakwater was built about I860 and the outer length of some 1 km or so failed 100 years ago. In connection with a study for safeguarding of the current breakwater we found after model studies and geotechnical calculations using PLAXIS that the existing breakwater as it stands today has a factor of safety below 1.0 and as far as I remember about 0.89 showing that it is very vulnerable. I hope that it will be possible to safeguard this fantastic historical breakwater for the future.
