TOWARD THE DEVELOPMENT OF A SUPPLY CHAIN COURSE SUPPLEMENT: TEACHING RISK USING CONTEMPORARY MOTOR CARRIER ISSUES

Employers want supply chain management programs to focus more attention on practical matters and less on theoretical. An important practical matter that could be incorporated into the classroom is the risk associated with transportation mode selection. In the U.S., motor carriers move 70% of cargo and represent 80% of total transportation costs, which was approximately $560 billion in 2009. In this paper, we identify issues faced by motor carriers, the implication of those issues on shippers' supply chain risk, and possible shipper mitigation strategies. To educate supply chain management students on this contemporary matter, we begin developing a course supplement.
