TECHNOLOGICAL CAPABILITIES OF LOCAL SUPPLIERS FOR THE SHIPBUILDING INDUSTRY IN EMERGING COUNTRIES

Technological capabilities seem to play a key role for competitiveness of firms in industrial sectors. Local suppliers in emerging countries have developed technological capabilities by operating and mastering technologies developed by others before developing their own technology. By using studies from firm technological capabilities in emerging countries, global value chains and clusters we discuss participation of local suppliers and their upgrading in global supply chains. Under the perspective of large industrial enterprises such as shipyards in the shipbuilding industry, we develop propositions about the role of technological capabilities on performance of local suppliers at the enterprise supply chain.
