The paper discusses some important geological and geotechnical issues pertinent to the construction of Gadouras dam, situated in the southern part of Rhodes island in Greece. It is a 67m-high earthfill dam founded on a clayey shale of flysch (weak rock). Data related to the use of the in-situ flysch as main core material are analysed. The foundation preparation and the reasons for increasing the foundation depth of the core during construction are presented. The effectiveness of trial sand drains below the downstream slope of the cofferdam in accelerating ground consolidation is discussed. Pore pressure measurements in the cofferdam and its foundation are evaluated. Finally, the overall dam behaviour and pore pressure measurements during first impoundment are reviewed.
