TRANSPORTATION GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS IN UNIVERSITIES: THE ROLE OF THE AMERICAN COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITIES PRESIDENT‟S CLIMATE CHANGE COMMITMENT

Universities are increasingly concerned about their environmental impacts and their contributionto emissions related to climate change. This paper discusses the role of transportation relatedemissions in the American College and University Presidents‟ Climate Commitment, analyzinghow public transit strategy is addressed in the pact and that strategy‟s contribution to its goals.No significant difference was identified between the amount of commuting emissions frominstitutions that reported adopting the transportation strategy and those that did not. Researchresults underscored the importance of a mix of strategies rather than a single solution in the questto mitigate mobile source contributions to greenhouse gases and proposed policy revisions.
