This study examines the public preferences on the use of visualization techniques in the publicinvolvement process in transportation planning. Two projects were selected for which theprototype two-dimensional, three-dimensional and four-dimensional visualization models weredeveloped. The models were presented at public meetings in which stated preference surveyswere conducted. The same models were also presented in a survey conducted via the internet.Majority of the 31 and 136 of the questionnaire and internet-based survey respondents,respectively, ranked the two-dimensional, three-dimensional and four-dimensional visualizationtechniques in increasing order of their abilities to convey the proposed project concepts. Morethan 71% of the respondents thought that transportation planning agencies should devote moretime and budget to develop advanced visualization models to encourage public participation. Inaddition, more than 75% of the respondents indicated that they would be more willing toparticipate and encourage others to participate in the public involvement process if bettervisualization tools were used.
