Alternative and supplemental noise metrics to A-weighted average sound level used for environmental noise assessment in Japan

This paper makes a brief review on alternative and/or supplemental noise metrics to A-weighted average sound level for the assessment of environmental noise such as traffic noise, industry noise, etc. in Japan. For example, level magnitude and frequency of C-weighted sound levels of noise events have been used as metrics for assessment and improvement of sound environment at public buildings such as schools, hospitals and so on near the airfield and maneuvering ground. The authors look back over the way to use such metrics. Needs and requirements for sound environment, however, have greatly changed with the times. Thus, the authors also make a brief discussion on the way to examine the validity of those metrics at various scenes.
