In Wallonia (Belgium), more than 60% of the arable cropped area is dedicated to cereals. The majorityof cereal chains are classically turned towards animal feed and human food. Key opportunities for non food uses canhowever be considered as a sustainable development perspective. This can be achieved only through an exhaustivecomparison of environmental and socio-economic performances of existing and potential valorization chains. Basedon a comprehensive description of the Walloon cereal landscape, the project “Alternatives for Cereals – in shortALT-4-CER” aims firstly at elaborating scenarios for food, feed, fuel and fibre uses of cereal resources in Wallonia(so-called “4F” scenarios). Scenarios definition is supported by the consultation of all involved stakeholders of thecereals chain (producers, wholesalers, processors, consumers, and decision-makers) in order to ensure a furtherscientific approach based on realistic existing and potential cases. Scenarios evaluation will first focus onenvironmental and socio-economic aspects through Life Cycle Analysis methodologies development fed by regionspecificdata adapted to the local context. Beside Environmental Life Cycle Analysis (E-LCA), a Social Life CycleAnalysis (S-LCA) methodology will be elaborated in order to grasp all 3 pillars of sustainable development.Environmental and socio-economic assessment methods will then be integrated thanks to multi-criteria analysisinvolving once again, as for scenarios construction, the stakeholders.
