Analysis of Information Content in Chaoshan Dialect Based on Phonetic Element

摘要

This paper analyses the differences of consonants, vowels and pitches between Chaoshan dialect and Mandarin. Through computing information entropy and compression ratio, this paper compares these two languages from the angles of phonetic spelling and context-dependency. According to the experimental results, we conclude that the entropy based on the phonetic spelling and the context-independency of Chaoshan dialect are higher than that of Mandarin.
