The influence of EFP solidity on the depth of penetration wasexperimentally and numerically investigated. It could be found that theeffect of the transition from solid to hollow EFP penetration on the Depth ofPenetration(DoP) depends on the impact velocity while at lower soliditiesthere is a nearly linear relation between solidity and maximum penetrationdepth. The further evaluation showed a significant increase in penetrationperformance per mass unit with decreasing solidity of the EFP. A closerinvestigation of the penetration process revealed that for EFPs with asolidity ≤ 80% the penetration process can be simplified to planarpenetration of the hollow EFP wall. This finding can be applied as a basicapproach to analytical modeling.
