Design and Erection of Structural Steel for the 1-480 Valley View Bridge, Cleveland OH

The I-480 Valley View Bridge project included the design and construction of a new 200' tall, 4150' long steel plate girder bridge between two 1970s era existing structures in suburban Cleveland, Ohio. Erection of over 9,000-tons of structural steel for the new bridge was completed using three custom-built, overhead gantry cranes which traveled using rails fixed to the existing bridges. Extensive analysis and planning by the DBT was required to ensure that the existing structures could accommodate the construction loads in addition to four lanes of full traffic loading in each direction (approximately 170,000 vehicles per day) during steel erection activities.
