This paper introduces the numerical modelling of very complex and large water supply system operated by the Shanghai South Water Company. The system supplies almost 3.2 million inhabitants. Water is provided by three water treatment plants with a total capacity of 26.6 m~3/s (up to 30.6 m~3/s at peaks). The main distribution system includes 15 main water pumping stations. The overall length of the water supply network is 3,400 km (with profile DN 100 ~ 2,000). Linking the hydraulic model to GIS, billing and telemetry systems is the basic condition for daily work with the most up-to-date model. The sophisticated model and tool of data transfer are requires to build-up and update from the GIS database and others data sources, maintain the data integrity, and server as base for the periodic model calibration based on broad monitoring campaign combining telemetry data and field measurements. Extended measurement campaign was done for model calibration as a key premise for the model trustworthiness. The paper gives information on the technical aspects of modelling considering the traditional circumstances that are typical for Chinese big cities and can serve as a good example to be followed in the optimization and rehabilitation process of water distributions systems in Chinese major cities. Our experience from developing a pilot hydraulic model of EXPO 2010 area is also included in this paper.
