The principles of value engineering (VE) and Lean Six Sigma (LSS) have muchin common; however, the synergistic use of these methods has the potential for achievingbenefits greater than either approach would derive on its own. This paper provides a briefsummary of the VE and LSS approaches, shows the steps involved in both, and cross referencesthose steps to demonstrate similarities and differences.Like LSS, VE is driven by customer requirements and strives to create quality throughcollaboration and data analysis. LSS uses a define, measure, analyze, improve, and controlapproach to identify root causes of problems and eliminate waste. The VE methodologydetermines necessary functions and uses brainstorming techniques to determine alternative waysto perform those functions. Furthermore, VE offers a way to incentivize government contractorsto reduce costs by sharing savings. These differences in perspective are the basis of potentialsynergies. This paper explores these differences and demonstrates how the VE methodology andtools can be applied to augment LSS improvement efforts with additional benefits fororganizations and their customers by improving product/process effectiveness and efficiency.
