The reactivity insertion accident is a very rapid prompt critical event requiring evaluation of the core response with multidimensional simulation models. SIMULATE-3K allows a direct, fully coupled modeling approach incorporating three dimensional neutronic, heat conduction, and hydraulic effects into a single integrated model.I briefly describe key characteristics of the PWR reactivity insertion event, provide an overview of the existing acceptance criteria, and a perspective of how those criteria might evolve in the future. I describe important features of SIMULATE-3K with emphasis on recent enhancements that allow for detailed editing of pin by pin quantities throughout the accident evolution. Representative results for an end of cycle transient initiated from zero power are provided as an example of how these new features may be used to better understand the physics of the event and evaluate exposure dependent fuel failure criteria.
