Brazil has been in the limelight for its run way success on using ethanol derived from sugarcane directly as an eco-friendly substitute for fossil fuel oil. Ethanol can be produced from the fermentation of corn, sugarcane, soya bean and sugar beet. Sugarcane, in terms of energy balance and conversion cost is preferred to other food crops-especially corn. Cost-wise it is cheaper then gasoline as per gallon gasoline costs $4.91 while 25% ethanol blended gasoline costs $ 3.88 to get energy equivalent to a gallon of gasoline. Current bio-fuel sources le. Corn, Soya beans & Rap seed (bio diesel) help reduce the food supply while technology for getting bio fuelsfrom switch grass, wood residue and Algae is not ready. Table-wise display has been given for the green house emissions/joule of energy produced, resources require in terms of water, fertilizer, pesticides, % of land an pros and cons associated with each source.
