Grand Challenges for Industrial Engineering in the 21 st Century

Industrial Engineering constituted a key driver in creating economic prosperity and improving the quality of life forthe masses of the developed world in the past century. As we look forward to the next century, new challengesconfront us that require the skill sets and mindsets of industrial engineers. The National Academy of Engineeringrecently created a list of Grand Challenges for the 21st Century and the IIE Council of Fellows constructed a list ofGrand Challenges for IE. In this paper we review and expand upon these efforts to explore the role industrialengineers can play in the 21 st century as we strive to provide service to humanity in a world with rapidly changingdemographics, higher global expectations, and environmental stresses.
