Most residential buildings obtain fresh outdoor air by infiltration.If a window is opened to obtain fresh air,it will increase energy consumption of the heating and cooling system.How to improve indoor air quality and to conserve energy are very challenging.This investigation used a three-layer,dual airflow window that brings outdoor air into indoors by small fans.Heat between the indoor air and outdoor air was exchanged in the two cavities formed by the three-layer glazing window system.The outdoor air temperature was tempered to conserve energy.The energy performance of the dual airflow window in Harbin,China was compared with that of a low-e window and a blinds window by using EnergyPlus,a building energy simulation program.The energy simulation results were validated by the experimental data obtained from an experimental facility that had six room-size test cells.Each type of the window was installed in a south-facing and a north-facing cell,respectively.The results show that cells the dual airflow window demanded 10% less heating energy without ventilation and a half of the heating energy with ventilation,compared with those cells with the low-e and blinds windows.
