A novel vertical rectangular capsule ice storage tank was developed,to improve the performance of the encapsulated ice storage tank.There is the air heat transfer resistance in rectangular capsules,because of the thin air layer above the water surface inside the capsules.The contact area between the air and the vertical capsules is smaller comparing with the horizontal capsules,and then the heat transfer is enhanced.To provide optimum velocity and a higher rate of heat transfer on the brine side,the baffle plates are used to guide the brine flow in the tank in multipass arrangements.A simulation model that predicts the performance during the ice making and melting processes in a vertical rectangular capsule ice storage tank was built,and was used in design or optimization of the novel tank.A test rig was established for validation of the simulation model,and the accuracy of the predictions was confirmed by the good agreement with experimental data.
