The reliability and accuracy of 'preliminary estimate' and 'preliminaryschedule' as part of front-end planning is mainly affected by the 'specificcharacteristics of a construction project', 'project details determined at the time ofplanning', 'experience of the planners', and 'historical database of similar projects'.The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the variables that critically influence theviability of automated front-end planning tools. A framework of variables is firstproposed in order to evaluate the comprehensiveness of the system objectives.Because there have not been many efforts to develop this type of tools, this studyintroduces recent real-world cases of the automated front-end planning system.Finally, findings from the entire research process are briefly summarized, andimplications and lessons learned for further development are outlined as well.
