Improving Yield in a Visual Inspection Task

Time balancing nature of Lean manufacturing suggests that an operator could assemble, inspect and pack the sameproduct. Due to demand and product type considerations, manual as opposed to automatic visual inspection isneeded in the operation under study. As demand, complexity and the amount of criteria to be inspected in aworkstation increased, the quality of inspection decreased. The results of this study show how a series-basedinspection, reducing operator mental load, and controlling management feedback resulted in a significant decrease inamount of defective units found at the client, thus improving our yield and product quality.
