During 2005 the Highways Agency (HA) awarded aa 10 year contract for the management, operation and development of telecommunications services on England England's motorway and trunk road network. AA major component of the project is the construction of aa new teleco telecommunications mmunications network. The new network is based on aa three tier architecture, at the lowest level the network uses Course Wave Division Multiplexing (CWDM) to extract aa potential capacity of 20Gbps from roadside fibre optic cables. The new network uses Mul Multi-Protocol ti-Label Switching (MPLS) to provide rapid (50ms) rerouting of services in the event of cable or equipment failures. The new network uses the ubiquitous Internet Protocol (IP) to provide highly flexible management of bandwidth and routing of traf traffic. Fic. The HA is developing aa new generation of IP ready applications and roadside devices to maximize the benefits provided by this network' however for legacy equipment the solution employs Time Division Multiplexing Over IP (TDMoIP) to provide aa truly co converged nverged solution that supports all future and legacy equipment deployed by the HA.
