In Galicia, the northwest of Spain, there is a big bay called Ría de Ares and is more than 5 kilometres long. At the end of the Ría de Ares the Eume river conform an estuary where Ponteudeume port is located, a harbour for fishermen and sport boats. The tidal inlet is surrounding by natural rocks on one side and a jetty built in 1985 that sustain Cabanas beach on the other side, converting it into a pocket beach. The environmental administration was worried about three items: The lack of dry sand in the north part of Cabanas beach, the lack of draught in the navigation channel and the visual impact of the jetty. This study embraces the analysis of historical data, a short term study that includes the wave propagation from deep to shallow water, the study of the wave currents and an inlet circulation analysis, where the current are forced by the tides and the river inflow. A long term evolution model is also applied to the Eume tidal inlet and Cabanas beach founded in the formulation of a sediment budget to establish the optimum maintenance dredging strategy.
