Diligent disposal of CKD is a major concern for the cement industry. The stabilization of soil with CKD has received wide attention due to its potential for disposing large volumes of CKD. The effectiveness of CKD to stabilize a particular type of soil is judged by the degree of improvement in soil properties that can be achieved through utilization of this material. An experimental study to investigate the effectiveness of two different types of CKDs for stabilizing kaolinite clay is reported in this article. The stabilizing effectiveness of CKDs was established by measuring the enhancement in the Atterberg limits, pH value, unconfined compressive strength and stiffness of the modified kaolinite clay as a function of the curing period, and the CKD-content. Three various levels of CKD content (8, 15 and 25% by weight of dry clay) were used in this study. The effect of the curing period on the clay properties containing CKD was investigated by measuring them at 1, 7, 28 and 90 days. The stabilizing effectiveness found correlated well with the amount of free lime present in the CKD. The curing period was also found to have significant affect on the stabilization process.
