As Japan moves toward the establishment of a sound material-cycle society, it aims to reduce the amount of waste disposed on the landfill in 2010 by almost half of that in year 2000. Moreover, zero waste emission is now becoming a popular slogan. Nevertheless, the landfill would still play an important role as a final disposal of waste. Nobody can deny the fact that securing the disposal site and risk management of landfill as final disposal facility are urgent issues that need to be addressed. Thus, gaining the trust from the local residents through the improvement of the safety of landfill would be a good start to find a solution to the waste management problem leading to a sound material-cyle society.
