YURI KONDRATYUK (OLEKSANDR SHARGEI): AN EMINENT UKRAINIAN PIONEER IN RENEWABLE ENERGY OF THE FIRST HALF OF THE 20-th CENTURY

The race of life and top achievements in renewable energy of Yuri Kondratyuk (1897–1942), a talented Ukrainian engineer, inventor and designer (whose original name was Oleksandr Shargei), is described. Space researchers and explorers know Kondratyuk mostly by his own concept of men's lunar landing first pronounced in his book "The Conquest of Interplanetary Space" (published in 1929) and which was entirely implemented in the Apollo mission. However, his works in the field of renewable energy are still out-of-the-way. The chronology of his life and activity is also shown. The wind and solar energy projects that Kondratyuk offered and developed, succeeding to render some of them commercial, are described too. In particular, the project of a 12 MW wind power-plant, including a 165 m high tower and a two-level wind turbine with the 80 m blade-span, is analyzed. This project surpasses by far not only the bygone plane, but the state-of-the-art, too. The results of Kondratyuk's creative ideas are also discussed in the aspect of current development trends in renewables.
