Combustion turbine (CT) power plants are well known to suffer from a loss of power output withan increase in ambient air temperature. Unfortunately, the periods of highest ambient airtemperatures are generally precisely those times when power demand is highest and poweroutput is most valuable. Various turbine inlet cooling (TIC) technologies are increasingly beingemployed economically to cool the inlet air, and thus enhance the power output of CT powerplants.This paper presents a summary of the data from a survey, conducted completed in 2003 by theauthors for the U.S. Department of Energy, of combined heat and power (CHP) plants employingTIC and thermal energy storage (TES) systems. The paper also incorporates the latestinformation on TIC systems in some recently installed CHP "packaged" plants.
