Improvements in ESP's to Increase Collection Efficiency and Reduce Cost

Even though an electrostatic precipitator (ESP) is a mature product that has been used to collectfly ash and dusts from power and industrial process gas streams for nearly 100 years, there arestill opportunities for improvements and advancements. ALSTOM is investing in severaltechnological innovations that could change the ESP in the future. Advancements in computercontrol systems, power supplies and other components will not only increase the total collectionefficiency of the ESP resulting in lower outlet emissions but will also lower the total installedcost. ALSTOM is actively conducting research on Advanced Process Control systems, higherefficiency collecting and discharge electrode systems as well as development of mechanisms toreduce dust re-entrainment losses associated with rapping.This paper will provide information on the status of the latest developments including somelimited data from recent field demonstration projects. There is no limit on the types ofadjustments and refinements that can be made to existing mature technologies like precipitatorsprovided there is a need and desire to improve the product.
