A number of intelligent cleaning systems are commercially available. Most onlyconsider one part, the clean/dirty determination, of a multi-part intelligent cleaningprocess. While this is an important and necessary part of any intelligent cleaningsystem, it is not sufficient. The order and frequency of sootblower operations, theachievable cleanliness level and sootblower process management are not included.Advancements in intelligent cleaning systems have been developed and implemented.These include adaptive sequence management and adaptive cleanliness management.Through adaptive sequence management, sootblowers that have the greatest impact onheat transfer are preferentially operated resulting in fewer overall sootblower operations,more effective cleaning and improved boiler performance.Adaptive cleanliness management moves from experience based cleanliness set pointsand sootblower operating conditions to ones determined from heat transfer changesfollowing blower operations. Therefore, achievable cleanliness levels are dynamicallydetermined based on current boiler operations, fuel quality and cleaning equipment inservice and sootblower operating conditions are correspondingly revised dynamically toreach the target cleanliness levels.The design methodology of adaptive sequence and cleanliness management, itsimplementation and results are presented in this paper.
