Converters have been playing an important role in the extraction and processing of metals eversince the first type of converter was invented about 100 years ago. Historically their operationhas been mainly based on the experience of talented operators rather than on strict control andoptimization technologies. However, in the new realities of unavoidable necessity to increaseproductivity and in the conditions of diversification of primary materials from variousgeographical areas, improving control and optimization techniques have become indispensable.In this paper a review of the authors’ previous work in terms of improving control andoptimization of converter operational practices related to magnetite content and precipitation,slag and metal blows, problematic and dangerous elements such as As, Sb etc. Has beendescribed by highlighting the advantages that the new control and optimization methods andtools bring to everyday converter practices. Several examples are given and future work isunderlined.
