Although FCC is considered a mature technology, in the past 25 years advances in feed nozzle design, systems to eliminate post riser cracking and, more recently, stripper design internals have been made, proving that there is still room for improvement. In order to further advance FCC technologies, a detailed understanding of the working mechanism of each equipment piece is essential. The present paper discusses Petrobras experience with FCC stripper performance evaluation. The influence of different operational variables such as feedstock, catalyst type and temperature in the catalyst stripability are revisited using large scale pilot plant and commercial FCC data. More fundamental studies made on different commercial FCC units using both gamma scan technique and gas/solids sampling are also presented and discussed.
