Tests were conducted on the Delta IV Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle (EELV) measuring the shock environment created during separation events that occur during launch, booster separation, and payload deployment. These tests were aimed at defining the pyrotechnic shock environments of the structure and adjacent components. The tests included measuring shock events during activation of the liftoff release system, solid rocket motor separation, common booster core separation (both forward and aft locations), and a payload fairing/shroud separation. The Boeing Company’s Laboratory and Test Organization in Huntington Beach, California, has assembled and used high-capacity, efficient methods of instrumentation, data collection, and data processing that provide quality dynamic data for this type of shock testing. This paper discusses some of the specific aspects of these methods, including: 1.1 200 to 300 data channels of up to 20-kHz bandwidth each 1.2 Entire event time history for all data channels stored on the throughput disk (hard drive) 1.3 Accelerometer power and conditioning that is integral to the acquisition and analysis system 1.4 16-channel umbilical data cables 1.5 Network data transfer 1.6 Shock response spectral processing using company programs based on the MathWorks Matlab software 1.7 Data trailer, which can be taken to the test site 1.8 Continuous display of all channels, simultaneously, during buildup and test.
