South Carolina (SC) has undertaken a major seismic risk and vulnerability study, using HAZUS, an earthquake loss estimation methodology developed for FEMA. We identified critical dams and reservoirs, quantified their relative vulnerability, assessed associated risks and prepared the input data for HAZUS. We assigned various risk factors to each darn and combined them into a site- and structure-specific "Total Risk Factor" (TRF). We ranked the darns by decreasing TRF and assigned to each a "Risk Class" ranging from Ⅰ (low risk) to Ⅳ (extreme risk). These results can be used to define evaluation procedures and priorities for future dam safety evaluations. Of the 2,286 SC dams listed in the National Inventory of Dams, only three belong to the Extreme Risk Class Ⅳ, and 94 to the High Risk Class Ⅲ. We rated the risk of the other SC dams as low to moderate.
