The influence of additions of methyl silicone resin and dimethyl aminofunctional polysilxoane on a high PVC, low VOC waterborne exterior paint and stain was investigated. A description of the coating's formulations and their physical properties are provided. The performance of the coatings was determined based on results from water absorption, water vapor permeance, accelerated and exterior weathering, wind-driven rain, and fungal challenge tests. Results from this study indicate that additions of methyl silicone resin and dimethyl aminofunctional polysiloxane do not impede the flow of water vapor through the coatings. The silicone-modified coatings were found to be highly resistant to water absorption both before and after weathering and outperformed several commercially available latex paints, and a commercially available stain and elastomeric coating.
