HIGHER SOLIDS SOLVENTBORNE ACRYLIC RESINS (LOW VOC)

Faster drying and lower VOC paint systems are current goals of the car refinish market. Driving these goals are productivity and government regulations, respectively. To address market needs, new high solids acrylic polyol (AP) resins that have been developed at Solutia will be described. Formulation studies comparing standard refmish AP resins versus the new AP resin were run targeting a tack free time of 30-40 minutes with a pot life >1 hour. Coating formulations using the new AP resin had lower VOC values and better appearance. This work also led to a new OEM AP resin. Liquid paint and final film property data will be described.
