Accurate prediction of solar array performance in space requires an understanding of radiation effects, which degrade solar cell performance over time to an extent that can be estimated. Such an estimation would ultimately be limited by the unpredictability of the radiation environment in space, even if it could be perfect in other respects. The aim of this paper is to establish what level of accuracy can reasonably be achieved for radiation degradation predictions, and how this should affect our approach to the prediction of radiation degradation in practice, and in particular regarding the number of solar cells that should be tested in a radiation campaign.
