This study involves a longitudinal investigation of an elaboration technique that required the students to actively participate in the learning process. The short-term effect, long-term effect, and student perceptions were examined. The elaboration projects were as effective in learning various tax topics as either the textbook or the textbook examples. It appears that the elaboration projects are a good alternative method of teaching complex tax topics.
