Gasification Technologies - The Outlook for Cost Reduction

There is widespread agreement within the gasification industry that one of the most importantfactors affecting the future commercial deployment potential of gasification is project cost. Inparticular, incremental improvements in capital costs, the cost of operations, and improvementsin plant availability are considered as necessary to enable Integrated Gasification CombinedCycle (IGCC) plants to be competitive in the power market. This paper will summarize thehistory of cost improvements over time, compare today’s engineering-procurement-construction(EPC) costs of an IGCC plant with other options, and look at possible strategies andopportunities for further reductions in plant costs in the future.
