Biodiesel has drawn much attention recently due to its renewable characteristics and low harmful emissions. Biodiesel is produced from vegetable oils or animals fats, and during the biodiesel transeterification, glycerol was formed as the principal by-product (10 kg crude glycerol for each 100 kg of biodiesel production) [1]. With the further application of biodiesel, environmental concern has been generated associated with glycerol disposals. Since many microorganisms can naturally utilize glycerol as a sole carbon and energy source, the bioconversion of glycerol has attracted wide attentions, like the production of 1, 3-propanediol, dihydroxyacetone, and ethanol and so on from glycerol [2].
