There is presently a window of opportunity in the pulp and paper industry toreplace a large percentage of older recovery boilers, an essential piece of thechemical recovery cycle in the Kraft pulping process. Gasification of black liquor toproduce hydrogen and carbon monoxide is considered as an attractive process toreplace the potentially dangerous boilers in the production of electricity andrecovery of useful chemicals. This study looks at the potential integration ofgasification and fuel cell technology in Canadian pulp mills and its impacts onenergy production, fossil fuel use and green house gas emissions.
