The paper represents the Guidelines for groundwater protection measures in the areas around highways proposed by Company for Highways in Republic of Slovenia. The base of the Guidelines is a quantitative hydrogeological classification that is based on the seepage velocity of a pollutant through saturated and unsaturated zones of an aquifer. Seepage of a pollutant through an unsaturated zone is determined with the specific vulnerability parameter while seepage through a saturated zone is determined with the exposure parameter. Both parameters together provide us with sensitivity of an aquifer for permanent and accidental pollution. Suitable protection measures for sealing and draining systems are stated for each sensitivity category. Sealing systems for the protection of slopes and driveways are mentioned among sealing systems, and shafts, troughs, gutters, drainages and pools are mentioned among draining systems. Along with technical measures, there are also some suggestions for the planning of intervention measures.
