Heavy metal pollution in Genna Luas mine site (South-Western Sardinia)

The Genna Luas mine (SW Sardinia) was intensively exploited over its relatively short life for its sulphide, Zn and Fe ores. However mining activity left behind a large excavation, now being converted to a controlled landfill, pyrite containing piles and a huge amount of mine waste in dumps around the site. Here the results are reported of investigations conducted for assessing soil, subsoil, ground- and surface water pollution which are aimed at the reclamation and environmental rehabilitation of the waste dumps. The study has been carried out within the framework of a project for rendering safe and rehabilitating the mine waste dumps and surrounding area.
